What is excessive sweating?
Excessive sweating is medically termed as hyperhidrosis or polyhidrosis (suddorrhea).When there is excessive sweating without performing any physical activity then it is termed as hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis can be mainly detected in the localized parts of the body-hands, underarms and feet. We can experience excessive sweating at the age of childhood or adolescence.
Types of Hyperhidrosis:
- Primary hyperhidrosis: In primary hyperhidrosis, the excessive sweating is formed without any obvious cause. Under this condition excessive sweating affects the localized parts of the body-hands, underarms and feet.
- Secondary hyperhidrosis: In secondary hyperhidrosis, the excessive sweating is formed in higher level (abundantly) in a person’s body. Under this condition, a person experience excessive sweating due to some medical conditions- menopause (women), diabetes, hyperthyroidism (thyroid gland problem) and tumor. Secondary hyperhidrosis is also known as generalized hyperhidrosis.
Causes for excessive sweating:
- Emotional conditions: When a person is going through some emotional problems like mental health problem-anxiety and nervousness then it leads to excessive sweating.
- Physical ailment: Physical ailments cause excessive sweating. Under this condition, a person starts to sweat profusely when he or she is suffers from some medical conditions like- Lung disease, cancer, tuberculosis, heart disease and diabetes.
- Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes in both women and men cause excessive sweating. Women who are going through their menopause phase or pregnancy experience excessive sweating. Men who are in their Andropause phase also experience excessive sweating at night.
- Medications: Taking of specific medications can lead to excessive sweating that could be the side effect of the medicine. Medication such as-Antidepressant (for depression), niacin and insulin for diabetes can cause excessive sweating.
- Obesity: People who are suffering from obesity have extra fats in their body which makes them sweat excessively even while performing some light exercise.
- Spicy and caffeine food: Consuming of spicy food (curries and peppers) and drinking caffeine beverages (coffee) can lead to excessive sweating. Acidic food like pickles and drinking alcohol can also cause profuse sweating.
- Smoking: Cigarettes contains nicotine which affects blood pressure, heart rate and raises your body temperature causing excessive sweating.
- Synthetic fabrics: Clothes made of synthetic fabrics – acrylic and polyester can cause excessive sweating.
- Neurological conditions: Neurological conditions such as- autonomic neuropathy, autonomic dysreflexia and post-traumatic syringomyelia causes excessive sweating.
Good products for excessive sweating:
- Drysol: Drysol is a deodorant which is usually prescribed by a doctor to control the excessive sweating. This type of deodorant is very effective and it has to be applied to your hands, armpits and feet before going to bed. You can apply Drysol once a day. - Sage tea at night: One of the good products for excessive sweating is Sage tea. This is a home remedy to prevent sweat. Just boil the sage tea leaves with water for 10 minutes and drink.
