Night sweats and hot flashes usually happen in women during their menopause period. Hot flashes can occur as a symptom of menopause. Peri-menopause can occur as early as 30’s and 40’s.
As the women approaches menopause, progesterone levels again starts to fall. This change in hormone can result in peri-menopausal symptoms of night sweats and hot flashes. What causes night sweats after delivery?
Night sweats after giving birth also known as postpartum sweating is a common condition among women. It is believed that unexpected drop of hormone estrogen levels trigger postpartum to release excess fluids or water retained from the body. This postpartum night sweats or sweating after giving birth starts soon after delivery and can last up to several weeks. However, night sweats after giving birth can last longer in mother especially who is continuously breastfeeding the baby and so is it common to have night sweats a year after giving birth.
Metabolic and hormonal fluctuations post-birth may be related to night sweats linked to breastfeeding.
During pregnancy, the body of the mother reserves lot of water or fluids in the body in order to nourish her body as well as the growing baby inside her.
Some amount of water is released out during the day while most of the fluids are released out at night during sleep as night sweats.
Hormones and postpartum night sweats-
Night sweating post-birth is very common with all the mothers. Few first time mothers may freak out by this condition. But it is a natural process. Some women may experience night sweats post-delivery only for few weeks while some other women may experience it longer until breastfeeding. Women who are experiencing night sweats don’t have to worry at all. It is a part of the body trying to get back to normal. Night sweats are just indications of your hormones (estrogen and progesterone) adjusting back to normal as you are not pregnant anymore. A drastic drop in the levels of estrogen hormone occurs right after giving birth and this contributes to sweating excessively.
So, with your hormones level getting back to normalcy, your night sweats will also cease. The more water you flush out from your body, the sooner the night sweats will get over you. Meanwhile, try to keep your body well hydrated with water and fluids. Don’t stop from consuming more fluids. In fact, fluids help the body to speed up the sweating process of flushing water. So, keep drinking water and other non-alcoholic fluids more often.
Even though is it common to have night sweats a year after giving birth, you may need to check with your doctor as some postpartum night sweats can be due to certain medical issues. If you have increased sweating for a year or more accompanied by a fever, it can be a sign of some hormone disorders such as overactive thyroid or hypothyroidism which is also one of the commonly occurring post-birth disorders.
