Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis is a disorder affecting people of all ages. Hyperhidrosis may occur on the entire body or it can be localized only in some particular region. The most common areas are feet’s, underarms, palms and hands.

What is Botox?

Botox is nothing but a preparation of Botulinum toxin type A (protein). Using Botox to treat hyperhidrosis has been approved by FDA in 1989. The low dose of this toxin is used as an injection to block the sweat glands. But before proceeding further, you need to make sure whether Botox therapy is suitable for you or not as there are several side-effects associated with it. It can be dangerous and fatal too.

How does Botox works?

Botox is injected on the affected area or mostly underarms. It is also used to treat excessive sweating on the hands, palms, soles of the feet and face. It is performed by an experience physician after a thorough examination and evaluation of detail medical history, for any possible risks of side- effects. Botox injection is given under the armpits in a series of numbers (15 to 25) near the sweat glands. Botox blocks the production of the neurotransmitter (these are nerve’s chemical signals responsible for stimulating the sweat glands). When the neurotransmitter is blocked, sweat glands are unable to receive the chemical signals and thus, sweat production is ceased. This will temporarily stop the sweat production from the injected area while the other parts of your body release moisture as usual.

Is Botox treatment safe and effective?

Yes. Using Botox to treat excessive sweating is safe, effective and fast too. It is highly effective in treating underarm sweating and other parts of the body. About 81% of the patients with Botox treatment have received more than 50% of sweat reduction. The procedure is fast and completes in about 30 minutes. Many patients can see the result within 3 to 4 days or a week of the Botox therapy. Botox can last for about 6 to 7 months. Generally, production of the sweat is decreased by 90 % within 2 t0 3 weeks.

Who should not take Botox?

A pregnant or a breast feeding mother should not take Botox injections. A person with motor neuron disorder or disease should stay away from Botox. Also a person allergic to Botox must stay away from using Botox to treat excessive sweating. There can be allergic reactions such as rashes, breathing problems and swelling. Consult doctor immediately for such reactions.

What are the side effects?

Side-effects may include-

  • Shortness of breath, rashes (allergic reactions)
  • Bruising, tiredness, headache, pain in the injected area, muscle cramps
  • Difficulty in speaking, swallowing, eyesight problems,

The main disadvantage of Botox is that it is not a permanent treatment. Botox need to be repeated every 6 to 12 months in order to achieve continued results.
